New locally focused family foundation seeks a giving strategy.

Grantmaking Focus and Strategy
Given this foundation's interest in older people, The Philanthropic Group researched current challenges and opportunities facing older people and examined the aging-related funding of other grantmakers in the nearby area. A paper that included several options for a grantmaking focus was prepared for the board. Experts in aging were brought in to present and talk with the board. Two opportunities were selected for implementation -- creating an elder-friendly community and supporting older people as volunteers serving others. The implementation strategy involved funding expert national organizations to share their knowledge with the local organizations that received action grants. Managed by The Philanthropic Group, over four years this foundation granted $4 million to local and national programs to bring more opportunity to the older citizens in this community of 200,000.

Independent foundation struggles to align diverse interests to maximize giving impact.

Board Consensus on a Focus for Grants
To leverage the diverse interests among the foundation's board members, The Philanthropic Group interviewed each board member, compiled an overview of the range of ideas, identified areas of agreement, analyzed relevant external factors, and facilitated group discussions to arrive at a consensus on the focus of future funding. The result was a commitment to focus on New York City children and youth.

National foundation seeks a strategy for $5 million funding initiative.

Fitting A New Initiative with Established Funding Interests and Style
Working closely with the CEO of this large national foundation on a board mandate to launch a one-time initiative in aging, The Philanthropic Group researched the foundation's grantmaking in areas of healthcare, social services, and higher education. With advice from experts and other major funders in aging, a paper was prepared that outlined issues and presented five one-time funding options that were consistent with the foundation's interests and style. With board approval and in consultation with senior foundation staff, plans for implementing two of the options were developed. The Philanthropic Group worked with the foundation's program officers to identify potential recipients and recommend the awarding of ten $500,000 grants to endow scholarships for masters' level social work and nursing students preparing for careers working with older people.
